The body of a 25-year-old northern California man Dustin Douglas Weber was swept out to sea while trying to photograph the tsunami’s arrival from Japan last month has washed ashore about 380 miles away, in Oregon, officials there said Tuesday.

Weber’s body was discovered near the mouth of the Columbia River on April 2, said Eugene Gray, forensic administrator for the Oregon state medical examiner’s office. According to an Associated Press report, Weber’s grandmother, a member of the Yurok Tribe, had just given him her old house high on a ridge near Klamath, about 20 miles from Crescent City. , his father drove an elated Weber from Bend to his new home. Weber was swept away near the mouth of the Klamath River in California on March 11.

He is the first person on the West Coast killed by a tsunami since 1964, when 11 people in Crescent City, Calif. died from the surge created by an earthquake in Alaska.

In the hours after the major quake off the coast of Japan, the official warnings had said the tsunami would hit the West Coast around 7:30 a.m., and Dustin thought the danger had passed, according to his family.

The tsunami caused 6- to 8-foot waves that flooded beaches and harbors along the Pacific Northwest. But Weber’s parents said their son and his friends believed the danger had already passed when they decided to take in the scene on the north side of the Klamath River.

Weber was with friends, but they were able to swim to safety.

The recent Japanese tsunami was triggered by a 9.1 magnitude earthquake. It battered several California harbors, with the most severe damage occurring in Crescent City.
