An optometrist at India’s Shekhar Eye Research Center has created diamond-encrusted contact lenses. Chandrashekhar Chawan said the inspiration for the eye bling, which has 18 diamonds lining its gold-plated base, was his wife’s diamond-encrusted teeth. Chawan said the $15,000 bling has received positive feedback from Bollywood, raising its chances of becoming an “in thing.”

Chawan said although some people found the expensive contact lenses scary when worn, the fashion would catch on once celebrities begin using it. “People take time to digest [new fashion], until some celebrity starts using it.” Chawan, in a Today.com interview, also said that most people approved of his creation. “I got mixed responses – some said it looks scary, but most of the people loved it,” he said.

Chawan swears that his contact lenses are safe, but other experts are of a different opinion. “We should not introduce harmful foreign objects, however shiny they may be, into our eyes,” eye surgeon Dr. Rajesh Khanna said.
