World’s oldest man dies at 116

Jiroemon Kimura, the world’s oldest man to have lived, passed away Wednesday morning at age 116.

Kimura, born in 1897, died in a hospital “from old age,” an official said in a statement. He was hospitalized early May due to pneumonia.

Kimura, the verified longest-lived man in history, and the first man in history verified to have reached 116 years of age, had seven children, 14 grandchildren, 25 great-grand children and 15 great-great grandchildren.

He worked at a post office for about 40 years, and, after retiring he took up farming which he continued to do until the age of 90.

The local official said Kimura never smoked and believed in the motto “to eat light and live long.”

On his 116th birthday last April, he received a pre-recorded video greeting from Japan’s Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.
