World’s oldest dog, Pusuke, dies at 26 – The world’s oldest dog has died, three months before celebrating its 27th birthday.

Pusuke, a male Shiba mix, died peacefully in his owner’s arms in Japan. The dog is believed to have died of old age.

“I would just like to thank him for staying alive so long,” owner Yumiko Shinohara said. According to Guinness, Pusuke was born on April 1, 1985 and recognized as the world’s oldest living dog last December.

Mixed-breed dogs tend to be healthier and longer-lived than their purebred relations, because current accepted breeding practices within the pedigreed community results in a reduction in genetic diversity, and can result in physical traits that lead to health issues.
